Carolina Surf School
Based at Playa Bonita in Las Terrenas, Carolina Surf School has been part of the local surf community since 2010. Founded by Dominican professional surfer and multiple-time national champion Carolina Gutiérrez, it pairs expert instruction with a genuine love of the ocean. Welcoming all ages and levels, the school will introduce our campers to surfing on one of Samaná's most beautiful beaches — helping them learn a new skill and build real confidence in the water.

Samaná Treetop Zipline
Set in the lush hills of El Valle, the Samaná Treetop Zipline is one of the most thrilling adventures on the peninsula — 12 lines and 13 stations soaring up to 350 feet high over rainforest, hillsides, and rivers. Its trained guides run a triple-cable, double-harness safety system and can even zip alongside younger or first-time flyers. For our campers, it's an unforgettable, safety-first taste of flying through the Samaná jungle canopy.

Manatí Water Sports
Founded by 'Pinto,' a local who has known these waters since childhood, Manatí Water Sports are the pioneers of guided kayak and stand-up paddle tours in Las Terrenas. Their family-friendly trips glide through mangroves, rivers, and reefs — where campers may spot manatees, turtles, and colorful fish — led by guides passionate about marine conservation. It's a hands-on way for our campers to explore Samaná's coastline and connect with the ocean they're learning to protect.

Camp DirectorHolly Greer
Holly is an educator, marine biologist, and lifelong explorer who has lived across Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Brazil since 2015. She speaks English, Spanish, and French, and teaches at Samaná International Academy, where she turns the natural world into a living classroom. Happiest in the ocean or exploring the outdoors, she loves helping young people step outside their comfort zones, build confidence, and discover nature, culture, and each other through real adventure.
CounselorCarla Ortega
Carla is Dominican, born in Santo Domingo and now living in Samaná, with a degree in Business Administration from UNPHU and fluency in both Spanish and English. Outgoing, adventurous, and full of energy, she creates a warm space where kids can be themselves, make friends, and try new things. She loves waterfalls, beaches, team games, cooking, nature, and animals — and can't wait to share her love of Samaná and lots of fun memories with every camper.
CounselorSergio Díaz
Sergio is Dominican, from Santo Domingo, and has called Samaná home for nearly three years, where his love of the outdoors draws him to the rivers, beaches, and trails that make the region so unique. With experience working with children and basic first-aid training, he brings a calm, responsible presence to every activity. He enjoys guiding kids through new experiences, encouraging teamwork, and helping them feel confident as they explore. Off the clock he loves nature, the beach, and a good game of chess — anything with a little challenge, strategy, and discovery.
Co-Founder & CounselorXiomara "Xio" Martinez
Xio is a Dominican entrepreneur, hospitality professional, and industrial engineer based in Samaná, and the co-owner of Samaná Ecolodge. She has spent years crafting experiences built around waterfalls, rivers, beaches, wellness, and authentic Dominican culture. Passionate about sustainable tourism and experiential learning, she loves helping young people slow down, explore, and build a deeper appreciation for the natural world — and for the community and beauty of the peninsula she calls home.
Co-Founder & CounselorJason Ryan
Jason is a serial entrepreneur, licensed Captain, and lifelong adventurer who was once among the top-ranked divers in the United States. He moved his family aboard a catamaran, sailed the Caribbean, and five years ago made the Dominican Republic home. He believes the best learning happens outdoors — getting hands dirty, taking healthy risks, and having fun — and is driven by teaching kids to see possibilities instead of limitations, and to chase the next horizon.
Co-Founder & Program CoordinatorEmily Ryan
Emily's love of camp began in her own childhood as a Girl Scout and through college summers spent as a counselor, lifeguard, and horse trainer at a 4-H camp. She later built a STEM robotics camp in South Carolina and co-founded Samaná International Academy, designing nature-immersed learning for students of over 16 nationalities. Having once lived aboard a sailing catamaran in the Caribbean, she brings a rare love of adventure and hands-on discovery to every Explora program.
